BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 7, 2013) - Audrey Kula finished 13th in the 100-yard butterfly Thursday, becoming the first Rollins women's swimmer to place at the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Rollins had never had a woman qualify for the event, let alone score points. After Kula's swim, the Tars stand in 28th place with four points.
The freshman went into the 100-yard fly as the fifth seed and came out of the prelims with the ninth-fastest time, stopping the clock at 56.02. In the consolation final later that evening, Kula posted a time of 56.39, just a half a second out of a top-10 finish. She finished ahead of Sunshine State Conference foe Catherine Parker of Tampa, who came in 14th with a time of 56.45.
Mychala Lynch of Grand Canyon was crowned national champion, winning with a time of 54.31.
Kula will continue her trek through the NCAA Division II National Championship on Friday, March 8, swimming the 200-yard butterfly. She will then later compete in the 100-yard freestyle, starting Saturday, March 9.
