WINGATE, N.C. (March 3, 2012) - The Rollins men's lacrosse team started out slow in the first half and could not recover, falling to Wingate 16-8. The Tars fall to 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in Deep South Conference play.
The first half saw the Bulldogs come out and control the opening 30 minutes of play. Rollins and Wingate struggled to find the touch early on, but the Bulldogs were able to garner two opening period tallies, while holding the Tars off the scoreboard.
Wingate again ramped up the scoring in the second period with four goals, while the Tars answered with one from Will Diamond, who collected his ninth marker of the season and brought Rollins within three goals, but Wingate responded and scored two goals before halftime to extend the lead back to five.
Coming out of the break the Tars came out re-energized and scored two goals within the first minute of play from Connor Galvin and Will Diamond. Once again the lead had been cut to three, but Wingate responded again, rattling off five straight goals en route to building up an eight goal lead, which would be the closest the Tars would come the rest of the game.
The third period had a bevy of action and saw each team make runs with the Tars making a final push to put up three unanswered goals on the board to draw within five goals heading into the final period.
Rollins would struggle in the fourth period only scoring two goals, while allowing Wingate to tally five to push the final score to 16-8.
Diamond led all Tars with two goals, while Jack Dever, Stephen DeFlumeri, James Libutti, Oliver Moore, Taylor White and Galvin all tallied goals. Diamond and White also tallied assists with Peter Harvey, Chuck Magid, Connor O'Leary collected helpers on the evening.
Harvey again was a force to be reckoned with in the faceoff circle, winning 18-25 of the faceoffs he was involved in.
Defensively, the Tars used a pair of goals to slow down the Bulldog attack, but Andrew Sheerin and Ethan Enriquez could not slow down the attackers enough. The duo combined for seven saves on the evening.
