ORLANDO, Fla. (April 9, 2012) - The Rollins volleyball team captured their second straight Sunshine State Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship this Saturday, April 7 at the Orlando Sports Center. The annual tournament gives each of the Sunshine State Conference teams an opportunity to participate in the emerging sport.
Thirty-two teams participated in this year's event that saw two of Rollins' teams make the final. Kelly Merideth and Kayla Austin squared off against Collyn Welsch and Jessica Wilson with Welsch and Wilson winning 21-15.
In the semifinals, Merideth and Austin defeated Tampa's Danielle Selkridge and Kahley Patrick, 21-17 while Welsch and Wilson edged out Florida Southern's Kendall Wilde and Lauren Huber, 22-20.
In its fifth year, Rollins won both the team and individual awards tallying 92 points as a team to beat out second-place Tampa (87 points). Florida Southern tallied 84 points for third while Lynn finished fourth with 83 points and Nova Southeastern fifth with 82 points. Rollins also finished first and second individually with Welsch and Wilson finishing first and Merideth and Austin second.
