MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 18, 2012) - Rollins won both a game one marathon and game two sprint over Florida Tech Wednesday by scores of 2-0 in 10 innings and 2-1.
The sweep moves 13th-ranked Rollins to 37-7 overall and 18-3 in Sunshine State Conference play while the Panthers end their season at 24-27, 10-14.
In the opener, Rollins bats stayed cold for the first nine innings, but the duo of Amye McIntyre and Hope Bitzer kept Tech off the scoreboard. McIntyre started and threw 4.2 innings, scattering six hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Bitzer came on in relief and scored the win, going five and a third, allowing two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Aimee Halpin and Monica Meadows each rolled up a pair of hits with Lawna Hunter and Kristea Rodden knocking in the game winning runs in the top of the 10th.
In the nightcap, Bitzer got the start and tossed three innings, surrendering two hits and one earned run. McIntyre spelled her in the fourth and picked up the win, allowing a pair of hits in four innings of work.
Meadows again swung the big bat, going 2-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Halpin, Rodden and McIntyre also had hits for the Tars.
Rollins kept its momentum from the end of game one with two runs in the top of the first on the first Meadows double. Tech got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with an Erica Tollett single, but the Tars staff held on for the victory.
The victory keeps Rollins one game back of Tampa in the SSC standings with just one conference series against Florida Southern remaining on the schedule. The Tars are back in action Saturday, April 21 at Palm Beach Atlantic in a nonconference doubleheader against the Sailfish. First pitch for game one is slated for 3 p.m. Fans can follow all the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
