WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 3, 2012) - Rollins sophomore Clara Teixeira has been chosen to represent her home country on the Brazilian National Team at the 2012 World Amateur Team Championships held in Antalya, Turkey.
Competing in the 25th women's championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy, the tournament will be begin on September 27 and conclude on September 30. The four-day event will be held on the new and old golf courses of the Gloria Golf Club. The championship coincides with the men's championship being played Oct. 4-7.
The invitation to represent Brazil in the championships is the first for Teixeira and will also be competing alongside sister Vitoria. In her first season at Rollins, Clara recorded four top-20 performances, including an eighth-place finish at the NSU Shark Invitational where she shot a season-low of 72.
"It is a great honor for Clara to be chosen to represent Brazil at the World Amateur Team Championship and to play alongside her sister. We are thrilled with her selection and we support her in the efforts to win the Espirito Santo Trophy for her country," said Director of Golf Julie Garner. "We look forward to the golf and life experiences she will garner as a part of this outstanding competition. She is continuing the unparallel tradition and legacy of Rollins women's golf around the world!"
The country of Argentina was the last to host this prestigious event in 2010 where the Korean National Team took top honors. Korea broke the record for the lowest score to win by 17 strokes over the USA.
Eighteen holes will be played per day on a 72-par course with teams that consist of three members. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for that round. The four-day total is the team's score for the championships.
The International Golf Federation, previously known as the World Amateur Golf Council, which comprises national governing bodies of golf in 122 countries and professional tours around the world, conducts the Women's World Amateur Team Championship. The Turkish Golf Federation will be the hosting organization.
