Mocs Take Two off Tars to Open Season

POLK CITY, Fla. (September 19, 2012) - In the annual battle of I-4, Florida Southern twice downed Rollins at the US Water Ski Hall of Fame in Polk City over the weekend. The event was both school's only tune-up for the NCWSA Eastern Regional Championships.

On Saturday, the Mocs bested the Tars 1440-950 and won 1360-850 Sunday.

Saturday:

The Tars men were paced by Drew Phillips' third place finish in the overall standings. He tied for fifth in the slalom, clearing two buoys at 35' off. In tricks, Phillips was runner-up with a score of 2980 and went 141 feet in jump to earn another runner-up finish.  Daniel Carter was fourth in the overall standings while Tommy Wiley tied for fifth and Matthew Bengtson was seventh.

Rollins' women's team was down one of its best skiers as Delfina Cuglievan was competing at the Pan American Championships. Nevertheless, the Tars totaled 390 points on Saturday to the Mocs 620. Michale Briant picked up one buoy at 38' off to finish runner-up in the slalom before scoring a victory in tricks with a score of 4680. Newcomer Gabriella Viljoen also had a big day, finishing fourth in slalom and fifth in tricks.

Sunday:

Carter led the Rollins men on the second day, finishing fourth overall. He took third in slalom, getting 1.5 buoys at 35' off. The senior was then sixth in tricks and third in jump. Phillips finished fifth in the overall standings, taking seventh in slalom, third in trick and second in jump with 148 feet. Tommy Wiley placed seventh overall for the Tars.

Braint's tricks victory and runner-up in slalom highlighted the Rollins women on the second day. She cleared one buoy at 38' off in slalom and earned a score of 3700 in trick. Haley Haines was fourth overall for the Tars, finishing sixth in slalom, sixth in trick and fourth in jump. Jennifer Tee was sixth in the overall standings.

Rollins will be back in action Oct. 5-7 at the NCWSA Eastern Region Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
