MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (September 29, 2012) - It was an intense battle at the Barry University Health and Sports Center but it was the Rollins Tars who came out the victors. Rollins topped the Barry Buccaneers 3-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24) Saturday evening to improve to 8-7 on the season and 2-2 in the SSC.
Senior Jill Lau led the Tars with 14 kills with one block and one dig. Camille Indest added 12 kills, while hitting a .440 clip, along with four blocks and three digs.
Kelly Merideth also chipped in with 12 kills of her own with six of those coming in the third set. Merideth was the difference in the third frame as the Tars edged the Bucs with a 25-23 victory. The 6-0 right side registered back-to-back kills to tie the score at 23-all and then gave Rollins a one-point advantage. Out of a forced Barry timeout, Merideth recorded her last kill of the set to give the Tars set point. A kill from Lau gave Rollins the win.
The Tars were outhit by Barry with a .176 hitting percentage but recorded more kills, digs and service aces that made the difference.
Rollins used the momentum from last night's win over Nova Southeastern and took the first set easily, 25-16. The Tars were unable to make up the deficit in the second set and fell 25-18. Rollins came as close as two at the 17-15 mark on a kill by Kelly Merideth. Barry then rattled off five straight points to pull ahead 22-15. A kill by Barry's Jayla Trombley handed the Tars the loss.
The Tars bounced back in the third set on Merideth's six kills and used that momentum in the fourth taking the 26-24 win and match. Rollins was able to hold onto their lead after Barry scored three points to come within two at the 20-18 mark. Barry made their way back again and tied the score at 24-all on a kill from Tanya Torres, but back-to-back kills from Jill Lau and Camille Indest secured the win.
Rollins returns to play on Friday, Oct. 5 as they host crosstown rival Florida Southern. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. Fans can follow the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
