WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 23, 2012) - In their second meeting of the season, the Rollins volleyball team captured a straight sets victory over the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates Tuesday at Warden Arena. The Tars posted scores of 25-15, 26-24 and 25-19. Tuesday's match also marked the Tars' third Dig Pink event.
The Tars worked quicker to defeat their opponent this time around as it only took three sets to record the win. In their last meeting, the two took the match to five as the Tars escaped with a 15-10 win in the deciding set. Rollins now improves to 14-10 on the season while handing the Pirates only their fifth loss of the season (22-5).
Rollins cruised to a quick 25-15 win in the opening frame as the Tars hit .375 and held AASU to a .139 hitting percentage. It was in the following set that Rollins had to fight for the win.
The second set saw 11 ties and six lead changes with the Tars trailing late in the frame. After a 15-all tie by the Tars, Armstrong Atlantic pulled away on a 4-1 run to lead 19-16. Rollins slowly cut away at the deficit and gained the 24-all tie on a Pirates defensive miscue. A block solo followed by a kill from Camille Indest secured the 26-24 win for the Tars.
In the final set, Rollins gained an early lead and held on strong to finish with a 25-19 win. The Tars hit a mere .178 but held their opponent to a .093 hitting percentage.
Megan Hodges and Indest led the Tars with 10 kills apiece while Jill Lau and Kelly Merideth each chipped in with eight. Jessica Wilson (5) and April Jackson (1) had the remaining kills on the team total. Wilson also tallied a career-high 15 digs while Merideth added four blocks.
April Jackson registered her fourth double-double of the season with 29 assists and 10 digs.
The Tars return to Sunshine State Conference action on Friday, Oct. 26 as they head to Tampa to face the No. 6 Spartans. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
