LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 24, 2017) – Rollins volleyball earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, it was announced Monday. The honor is the seventh-consecutive year the Tars have been recognized as one of the top academic programs in the country.
A record-breaking total of 822 teams were on the AVCA Team Academic Award list, now in its 25th year. The number breaks the previous year's record of 764 teams. Rollins is one of eight Sunshine State Conference schools and 118 from NCAA Division II on the 2016-17 list.
The Tars 3.6 GPA ranks in the top-25 of NCAA Division II. The program was also recognized for surpassing its Dig Pink fundraising goal, donating part of a nation-wide total of $91,671 for breast cancer research. Only Rollins, Limestone and Indiana (Pa.) achieved both honors.
The Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
