Jovita Named SSC Player of the Week
WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 2, 2012) - Riding a 17-match winning streak in singles, Rollins senior Lucas Jovita was named the Sunshine State Conference men's tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Jovita, the second-ranked singles player in the nation, was unbeaten in three matches last week, leading the sixth-ranked Tars to three huge victories.
He started the week with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win over 19th-ranked Christian Hansen of then top-ranked Valdosta State. In doubles, he teamed with Jason Alabaster (ranked 10th in Division II) to beat Hansen and Niklas Herbring 8-3. Rollins went on to blank the Blazers, 9-0.
On Saturday against second-ranked Barry, Jovita cruised past 11th-ranked Marco Mokrzycki 6-1, 6-1 in singles and teamed with Alabaster to win 9-8(4) over Daniel Schmidt and Fabian Groetsch in doubles. Rollins beat the Bucs 5-4 in thrilling fashion to assert itself in second place in the SSC.
Less than 24 hours later, Jovita traveled to St. Petersburg and won twice more against Eckerd. He beat Dylan Randazzo 6-0, 6-1 in singles and combined with Alabaster to beat Randazzo and Stephen Felman 8-2 in doubles. The Tars earned their second shutout of the week, defeating EC 9-0.
On the season, Jovita is 17-1 in singles play.
Rollins hosts its last home match of the regular season on Tuesday, April 3 against New Orleans. Competition is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
