WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 10, 2017) – A tremendous outing on the mound, coupled with timely hitting, helped the Rollins Tars to a 4-1 win over the West Florida Argonauts on Friday evening.

Sophomore pitcher Brad Case used the strikeout to his advantage, and set the tone early by striking out the side in the first inning. He ended up tallying nine punchouts in his seven innings of work. During that time frame, he allowed one run on three hits and did not walk a batter. After cruising through the first six innings, Case ran into trouble in the seventh, when the Argonauts plated a run. It wasn’t enough however, as the Tars offense had spotted him an early lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Mike Purcell led off the second inning with a single to the left side. After moving to second on a one-out groundball, he would come around to score on a Philip Burket single. Burket, who moved up to second on the throw home, was plated shortly thereafter courtesy of a Mike Dolan base hit.

Things remained quiet until the bottom of the sixth inning when senior captain Chris Corbett unleashed a moonshot to deep left field, giving the Tars a 3-0 lead. It was the first longball of the season for Corbett, who led the Tars in homeruns in 2016.

After escaping the jam in the seventh inning, Case was replaced by AJ Chacon in the eighth. Chacon promptly handled the Argos 7-8-9 hitters. A Peter Nicoletto bloop single in the bottom of the frame would score Grant Ashline to give the Tars a 4-1 lead. Tars closer Joey Vecchione then came on in the ninth, and did his job to perfection, preserving the 4-1 lead and earning his third save of the season.
