WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 11, 2017) – Rollins struggled to string together hits, going hitless until the sixth inning, falling to the University of West Florida 5-1 Saturday afternoon. The Tars move to 4-1 on the season, while West Florida improves to 2-4.
Brian Auerbach got the start on the mound for the Tars, going 5.0 innings and fanned 7 batters. Despite the strikeouts, the junior starter gave up eight hits and allowed four runs, all earned. For West Florida, Jackson Smith held the Tars hitless through five innings before giving up a pair of infield singles to Brian Brooker and BJ Minarcin. Nick Breen later singled, to drive in the only Tars run of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
West Florida jumped out to an early lead on the Tars, scoring their lead-off man in the top of the first inning. Chase Keifer singled and later stole second, only to be driven in by the third Argos batter. The Argonauts never looked back after scoring their first run, extending their lead in the top of the second with a little small ball. Chase Keifer was able to lay down a sac bunt to score Robert Lopez, putting West Florida up by two. The Argonauts didn’t stop there, scoring two more runs in the top of the fourth by way of a sacrifice fly by Ladeavon Matthews and later a Tanner May single.
After earning their first hit in the bottom of the fifth, Rollins was able to put together a rally and threatened to score for most of the inning. Brian Brooker and BJ Minarcin both singled, putting men on first and second. With a Grant Ashline walk, the bases were loaded for the heart of the Tars order. Nick Breen was able to rope a single to right field, but unfortunately that’s all the Tars could muster, leaving three runners stranded to end the inning.
