WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 19, 2017) – Under picture perfect weather and on calm water, the Rollins rowing team hosts its annual Spring Break race.
Rollins women welcomed the University of Florida and Bryant University to Lake Maitland while the Tars men used the opportunity for training. Both programs were able to take their best strokes to date.
The Tars Varsity 8 of Sarah Ankli, Grace Wamester, Isabella Sandoval, Elizabeth Berry, Elise Marquette, Samantha Talucci, Rhiannan Holland, Morgan Colley, and Isabella Seddon rolled to a victory to tart the day, beating UF to the line with a time of 6:55.3, more than two seconds ahead of the Gators. Bryant was a distant third in 7:48.8.
Rollins JV boat posted a 10-second win over Florida as Ana Rivas, Kelly Farrell, Charlotte Kaye, Elise Marquette, Erin Snyder, Nicole Vitt, Ashley Kinsley, Alyssa Rabade, and Cameron Robinson posted a time of 7:18.1.
Both boats were able to get leads in the race and keep them through the finish line. Florida mounted a few moves in the middle of the race making up a few seats, but the Tars countered and stayed out in front.
Both Novice 4 and Novice 4 “B” boats earned victories on the day.
The Novice boat of Ankli, Sandoval, Berry, Holland, and Wamester outdistanced UF by 0.7 seconds. The Tars and Gators were neck and neck through the 1000 meter buoys until Florida began to open up a lead. The ladies never lost contact with UF and mounted a huge move in the last 500 meters to come back and win.
The “B” boat of Robinson, Farrell, Kinsley, Vitt, and Kaye shot off the line and never looked back, posting a 46-second win over Florida.
The novice women’s 8 continues to improve their times each week and are hungry to finish in the medals in this boat.
Both Rollins men’s and women’s crews are coming off solid spring break training and will have a short week before traveling to Gainesville, Georgia for the John Hunter Regatta. The Tars will race three 8s and some 4s against more than 15 schools from across the Southeast.
