WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (April 10, 2017) – Rollins men’s pair and Varsity 4 both won gold against tough conditions and tougher competition at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor Township, New Jersey over the weekend.
High winds and chilly temperatures greatly altered the schedule on Mercer Lake and pushed most of the races to Sunday.
Marc Bremmer and Mitchell Laughlin got the Tars started with a dominate performance in the pairs competition. They cruised to a victory in the first heat on Saturday, beating second-place New York Maritime by 11 seconds. In the final Sunday morning, the duo again powered down the course and posted a winning time of 7:31.76, a full 13 seconds ahead of the Merchant Marine Academy and 16 ticks in front of Loyola.
The Varsity 4 boat was equally impressive and started with a heat victory. Laughlin, Bremmer, Cameron Boyd, Nilsen Arias and Sarah Ankli (cox) posted a time of 7:09.82 and beat Bowdoin by two seconds. In Sunday afternoon’s final, the boat was in a battle with Bowdoin, Mercyhurst and Wentworth. With 700 meters to go, the Tars found another gear and pushed into the lead, stopping the clock at 7:06.53. Mercyhurst was second in 7:08.53 while Bowdoin (7:08.56) was third and Wentworth (7:09.87) fourth.
The crews will next have a short week before traveling to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Varsity 4 will go up against the region’s best April 13-15 on Melton Lake.
