WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 10, 2009 )- The Rollins softball team split their doubleheader with Tampa Friday evening, dropping the first game 9-7 before capturing a 2-1 victory in eight innings.
With the split the Tars go to 36-7 overall and 9-6 in conference play, while Tampa moves to 25-8 overall and 12-4 in the conference.
Game one of the doubleheader saw the Spartans jump out to an early 6-0 lead behind three RBIs from Kallan Casey and Becky Vycas.
The Tars made it interesting as they countered with a
Christine Roser RBI single, which brought around
Monica Meadows. Two batters later
Missy Thogmartin belted a three run homerun to cut the defict to 6-4.
Rollins surrendered three runs in the top half of the seventh inning to fall behind again by five runs. The deficit would prove to be insurmountable as Rollins could only post three runs via a
Monica Meadows blast to left field.
Rachael Foster, who earned the loss, falls to 14-2 and suffered her first conference loss of the season.
Game two of the doubleheader saw the Tars fall behind late in the game as Tampa posted one run in the top half of the sixth inning. Rollins was held scoreless in the sixth, but in the bottom of the seventh
Rachel Almengual took the first pitch offering over the left field fence to tie the game at one.
Rollins held Tampa scoreless in the top half of the eighth inning. With the top of the order due up for the Tars, Roser and Rausch both earned walks off Tampa's Henriott. After that Henriott surrendered a single to Thogmartin, which brought around Roser for the game-winning run.
With the win the Tars won the series against the conference-leading Spartans with 3-0 victory, Thursday evening
Rollins will travel to St. Augustine, Fla., Wednesday, April 15 to tangle with the Flagler Saints. The doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m.
