WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 23, 2012) - For the third time in the last four years, the Rollins women have captured the Sunshine State Conference Mayor's Cup all-sports trophy, it was announced by SSC commissioner Jay Jones Wednesday.

Led by the conference champion and national semifinalist women's basketball team, the Tars totaled 47 points to sneak past Nova Southeastern by one. Tampa was third with 43 points while Florida Southern (40.5) and Barry (37.5) rounded out the top-five.

Rollins finished seventh in the men's division of the Mayors' cup, earning 25.5 points. Florida Southern and Florida Tech shared the trophy, each racking up 34.5 points. Lynn was third with 31.5 points.

First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award has traditionally been sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.

In the women's division, points are awarded based on final conference standing in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, rowing, and softball.  In the men's division, points are awarded for final standing in cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, and baseball.  In each category, points awarded depend on the number of conference schools that sponsor the particular sport.  In both divisions, points in soccer and basketball are awarded based on regular-season finish, while tennis points are based on finish in the SSC tournament.

The Tars basketball team won the final game of the regular season to capture its 13^th SSC championship and earned eight points toward the Mayors' Cup standings. Both soccer and softball teams earned runner-up finishes while the tennis and volleyball teams finished third in the standings.

On the men's side, the Tars were led by a third place finish from the soccer team while basketball tied for fourth.

Rollins' women have won six total Mayors' Cups with the first coming in the 1998-99 season. They won back-to-back in 2003 and 2004 and have captured the cup in three of the last four years.
