WINTER PARK, Fla. (August 1, 2012) - Rollins incoming freshman Annie Dulman recently finished runner-up at the Optimist International Golf Championship at PGA National Resort as part of a very busy summer. The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. native will next play in the U.S. Women's Amateur, hosted in Cleveland, Ohio Aug. 6-12.
"Annie has had a wonderful year of competitive golf that has culminated in her qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur next week in Cleveland," said Rollins head coach and Director of Golf Julie Garner. "I have watched her play many times and her game is on a steady ascent with the help of her mother Laura who serves as her teacher."
In a final tune-up for the U.S. Women's Amateur, Dulman used a one-under 71 final round and vaulted into a second place tie at last week's Optimist International. She opened play with scores of 76 and 77 and sat among the early leaders. She then charged up the leaderboard over the last two rounds, shooting scores of 75-71 for an 11-over par 299. The event featured more than 100 of the best junior players in the world.
"I was glad to finish second in my last junior event," said Dulman. "It was great playing at PGA National because it's close to home and we (Rollins) will be playing there in a tournament this fall."
Dulman now sets her sights on the U.S. Women's Amateur, hosted at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio. The first round is slated for Monday, Aug. 6 and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 12.
"This is my first USGA event so I'm looking to go out there and just do the best I can," added Dulman. "I haven't really set any goals other than to play and see where it takes me."
Rollins women's golf has an illustrious history at the U.S. Women's Amateur. Most recently, Tars four-time All-America honoree and individual NCAA champion Joanna Coe qualified for the 2011 event. Last year, Rollins alumna Terri Frohnmayer won the 2011 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur in Chattanooga. Former champion Marlene Stewart Streit, Laura Carson, Connie Shorb, Joanne Catlin, and Frohnmayer all were a part of the field and wore the Rollins Blue and Gold as collegians. In addition, Rollins legend Betty Probasco served as the Co-Chairman of the Championship and The Honors Course in Chattanooga was designed by Rollins graduate Pete Dye.
After the Amateur, Dulman will join her Rollins Class of 2015 for freshman orientation in August.
"We are really excited about her addition to our team and campus community" added Garner. "Her play is crucial to our success and we look forward to her continued improvement over the course of her college career."
