WINTER PARK, Fla. (August 3, 2012) - Annually one of the nation's premier fall events, the Rollins College Invitational will be rebranded the McDonough Cup, honoring former Tar James McDonough who passed away in 2011.
"We wanted to make sure no one forgets about James and his contribution to the Rollins men's golf program," said Rollins head coach Kyle Frakes. "We believe renaming our invitational will be a fine tribute to James and his family."
McDonough was born in Boston, raised in Milton, Mass. and started his college career at Rhode Island before transferring to Rollins in 2007. He played three seasons for the Tars, competing in 14 total events. McDonough's top performance came at the 2008 Birmingham Southern Invitational where he tied for second.
From the minute McDonough arrived at Rollins, he was a team leader, both on and off the course. His charismatic attitude influenced the entire program and directly led to the Tars' success.
McDonough, at the age of 24, died Feb. 26, 2011 after a tragic accident in Charleston, S.C.
"James loved Rollins and always felt privileged to play under the direction of Coach Kyle Frakes," said James' parents Peggy and Jim. "We are thrilled and honored that Rollins seeks to keep James's spirit, passion, and dedication to Rollins and golf alive by renaming the College Invitational in his memory."
James will also be honored by the creation of an endowed scholarship to benefit golf at Rollins.
Formerly the Rollins Invitational, the McDonough Cup is annually contested the last week of October and concludes most team's fall seasons. Last year, the event was moved to its new permanent home at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando. Rollins tied for second place and was led by individual medalist Spencer Cole.
The inaugural McDonough Cup is slated for Oct. 29-30, 2012 at Rio Pinar.
