LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 14, 2012) - The Rollins women's volleyball team continues to raise the bar as they debut the 2012 season as the No. 22 team in the nation, it was announced Tuesday by the AVCA.
The preseason ranking is the first in program history for the Tars as they concluded the 2011 season with a 24-11 overall mark. Rollins also received votes in the final AVCA National Poll last season.
Taking the top spot in the 2012 preseason poll was five-time champion Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears received all 32 first-place votes and totaled 800 points. Sunshine State Conference foe-Tampa took second with 760 points.
Other SSC schools in the preseason rankings include the No. 19 Eckerd Tritons. Florida Southern was the only other school to receive votes. Eckerd knocked out the Tars in the second round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament last season.
This season, the Tars will be led by two-year starter and All-American Megan Hodges. The 6-1 outside hitter held the 16th-best kills per set average (4.23) in the nation and was also 19th in points per set (4.79). She is ranked second in single-season kills in the Rollins record books and fourth in total attacks.
The Tars will return all six starters from last season but face the loss of libero Phoebe Corder. Rollins returns a total of 11 letterwinners.
Rollins opens up the 2012 season at their own Rollins Invitational on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Tars will take on Kentucky State on Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m.
