SARASOTA, Fla. (April 18, 2012) - The Rollins women's rowing team took to the waters at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota for the 2012 FIRA Championships this past weekend competing in four events.

Racing began Friday with the novice women (Kali DeBarry, Alexia George, Maria Almaraz, Haddie DeHart) finishing fourth in their heat with a time of 8:27.9.  Only the top three in each heat earned a spot in the final, but had the women raced in the second heat would they have moved onto the final, having placed first in Heat 2.

"This was an unfortunate circumstance for our ladies," said Head Coach Shawn Pistor.  "This is what happens sometimes and you have to move on and focus on the next race."

Also placing fourth in their heat was the women's varsity 4 (Kim Gossard, Seonag Doherty, Molly Kallins, Michelle Assaly, Katy Hoyer) with only five boats racing in their heat.

Rollins also raced two pairs on Friday with the "A" pair (Andrea Micci, Katy Blaszyk-Perry) advancing to the grand final on Saturday, finishing sixth overall.

Saturday's competition featured the varsity 8 (Kim Gossard, Seonag Doherty, Molly Kallins, Michelle Assaly, Katy Hoyer, Haddie DeHart, Kelsey Gunderson, Katy Blaszyk-Perry, Andrea Micci) as they finished seventh, registering a 8:04.1.

"This was a tough weekend for the women," added Pistor.

The novice 4 will have a short training week as they prepare for the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. where they look to redeem themselves.  The varsity 8 will seek their redemption at the 2012 Sunshine State Conference Championships held in Fellsmere on April 28.
