Rollins College Athletes of the Week:  Men's and Women's Rowing

The Rollins men's novice four and the women's novice eight have been selected as this week's Rollins College Athletes of the Week for their performances at the 2011 SIRA Championship Regatta held in Oakridge, Tenn. on Sunday afternoon.

The men's novice four took home the gold in the A Final with a time of 6:59.30.  The four (M. Klein, R. Webb, A. Hakim, M. Verboncoeur, and K. Zimmerman) started off with a first place finish in their heat, 11 seconds ahead of second-place William & Mary to qualify for the AB Semi.  The boat then finished first, 9:38 ahead of Virginia and edged them out once again in the A Final.  The four faced all but one Division I school in the final.

The women's novice eight's third place medal was the first for the eight in over 15 years.  The eight (K. Gossard, M. Kallins, M. Frost, A. England, S. Doherty, K. Hoyer, M. Assaly, A. Loescher, and N. Hernandez) finished fourth (8:12.93) in their heat to reach the AB Semi and shaved off more than a minute to finish third (7:18.72) behind Ohio State and Nova Southeastern.  The boat then advanced to the A Final and finished third (7:44.24).
