VALDOSTA, Ga. (May 5, 2012) - With their backs against the wall, fourth-seeded Rollins came out swinging, eliminating the eighth-seeded Miles College, 6-2.
Both teams were facing elimination after losing in yesterday's first round, Rollins losing to Ala.-Huntsville 3-2 and Miles fell to top-seed Valdosta State, 5-2.
The Tars wasted no time, seizing a three run lead in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff double by junior Aimee Halpin, senior Lawna Hunter sent a 2-2 fastball well over the scoreboard in left center for her sixth homerun of the year.
Rollins would plate another in the inning on a sac fly off the bat of senior Hope Bitzer to score Monica Meadows. Meadows had reached on a double after the Hunter homer. The double by Meadows set the career record for doubles at 60.
After a 1-2-3 Miles second, the Tars scored three more in the bottom half of the inning on five hits with RBI's by Meadows and fellow senior Krista Rodden.
Both teams would then go scoreless until Miles joined the party in the fifth, scoring two on just one hit but Rollins commited two costly errors, allowing the Golden Bears to pull within four, 6-2.
But that was all that freshman Taylor McGowan (6-0), who came on in relief for Bitzer in the third, would surrender the rest of the way, picking up the win to keep Rollins' regional hopes alive.
With the win Rollins improves to 41-10 and Miles ends their season with a 29-28 record.
Halpin went 4-4 on the afternoon with two runs scored. Meadows added two hits as well as an RBI and two runs scored.
Rollins will now play Ala.-Huntsville, the loser of Saturday's game one against top-seeded Valdosta State, Saturday at approximately 6:45 pm. Fans can follow along live on the Tars Sports Network on RollinsSports.com
