WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 11, 2012)- The eighth-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team picked up a victory in their season opener, Saturday night, against Saint Leo, 23-7. The Tars offense started off quietly, but ramped things up and was overpowering against Saint Leo.

The game was full of firsts for both sides as this marked the first time in history that two Division II Florida programs would face head-to-head and only the second all-time meeting of two Florida schools. It also marked the first time two Sunshine State Conference schools played a women's lacrosse match and also was Saint Leo's first game as a new program starting this year.

The Lions made it interesting early in the game with both teams deadlocked at one and then again when Saint Leo climbed within one goal at 3-2. Rollins would respond with a 20-5 spurt to finish out the game and cement their first victory of the season.

Rollins used a balanced scoring attack with 12 players registering goals, including multi-goal efforts from Sarah Ann Showell with four, Cat Kelley with three, and Mo Imel with three. Sophie and Anna Townsend each tallied a pair along with Ginevra Czech and Erica Pagliarulo.

Even though the offense was firing on all cylinders the Tars clamped down with a strong defensive effort with the Tars using their trio of goalkeepers to thwart the Lions attack. Elise de Lisle, Vasiliki Barakos and Michelle Dillingham stood strong in net for the Tars as only five shots found the back of the net.

The Tars held strong advantages over the Lions with Rollins edging out Saint Leo by six groundballs, 29 shots and 15 draw controls. Saint Leo goalkeeper Brittany Millsap had her hands full and was up to the task, collecting 10 saves on the evening, but it would not be enough to keep the Lions close.

Rollins will return to action on Monday when they host the Scotland National Team in a home exhibition match at 4 p.m. from Cahall-Sandspur Field.
