WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 29, 2012) - In the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, the SSC champion Rollins knocked out the Lynn Fighting Knights 63-47 Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals on Saturday hosted by Florida Southern.
Led by Kourtnie Berry's 12 points, Rollins shot 34 percent (21-61) from the field and was 14-of-24 from the charity stripe (58 percent) and 7-of-27 (26 percent) from 3-point range.
At the half, Rollins led by nine (33-24) as they shot 35 percent (11-31) from the field and were 7-of-12 at the line. Berry scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half.
Both teams traded buckets and tied the score five times before Rollins broke away from the Knights at the 5:58 mark. Back-to-back three's from Berry gave Rollins an eight-point cushion with 4:05 left to play. The Tars led by as many as 13 with 1:38 on the clock on a layup by Cohen to put the Tars up 33-20.
Rollins held on strong to their lead in the second half as Lynn came within two, 36-34 with 12:55 on the clock. The Tars got hot once again as they went on a 12-0 run to lead 47-34 with 10:20 left to play. Lynn went cold in the final minutes of play coming as close as 12 with 3:42 on a shot by Kira Harvey. The Tars closed regulation on an 8-2 run with six points coming from the hands of freshman Sarah Taylor.
The Tars will wait open the result of No. 3 Barry and No. 6 Florida Tech and will face the winner of that contest. Rollins will play in the night-cap of the semifinals slated to begin at 7:30 in Lakeland, Fla. For the latest news on the Tars, check out the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
