WINTER PARK, Fla (February 5, 2012) - Unlike Saturday, when the Tars used pitching and timely offense to take two games from West Alabama, it was the Rollins offense that sealed an opening weekend series sweep with a 10-4 route of the Tigers.

Brian Lattanzi led the way, going 3-4 with two runs scored. Shortstop Nick Adams and outfielder Zach Persky each added three hits as the Tars erupted for 14 hits off of six different Tigers hurlers.

West Alabama took the lead early after center fielder Ladarrius Cole led off the game with a double off of Tars starter Mike Howard. Cole then scored two batters later when first baseman D. J. Turo grounded out to Adams at short.

The Tars answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second on a sacrifice fly by senior Hunter Mayfield and an RBI single from Adams that scored Lattanzi.

The Tigers regained the lead in the fourth on a two run bomb by Turo after a leadoff walk by Chris Duncan. It looked as if Howard's afternoon was just about over as he then gave up back to back singles after the homer. Coach Sjogren, however, chose to stay with the senior and he answered the call by striking out B.J. Smith, followed by back to back fly outs to end the inning.

After a two out single from Adams that moved senior Boston Langley to second after he had singled earlier in the inning, Persky came up with two runners on and two outs. Persky then ripped a double into the left center field gap that scored Langley easily and after a bobble by center fielder Cole that allowed Adams to score all the way from first on the play, the Tars had regained the lead, 4-3.

West Alabama added one more run of their own in the top of the fifth when second baseman Brett Langham scored on a wild pitch by Garrett Yount, who had just entered the game in relief of Howard.

But that was all the Tars staff would relinquish the rest of the way as the tandem of Yount and freshman Brett Mueller shut down the Tigers the rest of the way.

Rollins was able to break the tie with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. With the help of some insurance from three more in the sixth, highlighted by a two run homerun from catcher Sean Reilly, and one more in the seventh, The Tars cruised to a 10-4 final and a series sweep to open up the 2012 season.

Yount (1-0) received the win in relief going 1.2 innings while giving up just one hit. Colter Millican took the loss for UWA, allowing six runs, five earned, in a little over two innings of relief.

Rollins will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Pensacola, Fla. for a weekend series with West Florida. Game one is slated for Saturday Feb. 11 at 3:00pm. Fans can follow along on the Tars Sports Network at
