WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 23, 2012) - No. 16 Rollins used a total of eight extra base hits to sweep the Thorobrettes of Kentucky State University Thursday evening, 10-0 and 9-0 respectively.

In game one, the Tars cracked the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single through the left side of the infield by sophomore Hilary Brown that scored Meredith Foster. Foster had led off the inning with a double to the base of the wall in right center field.

Rollins then opened the flood gates in the third, first on a bases loaded walk to shortstop Shelby Walters that forced home Monica Meadows. Brown then followed the walk with a moon shot to left field that grazed the top of the fence and fell over for a grand slam, increasing the Tars' lead to 6-0.

After back to back scoreless innings from both teams, Rollins came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Veronica Alred led off the inning with a fly out to left then Meadows followed with a single to left field. Pitcher Hope Bitzer then walked, advancing Meadows to second with one out. After Foster lined out for out number two, senior Lawna Hunter singled up the middle, plating Meadows to extend the lead to 7-0.

That brought up Walters with runners on first and second with two outs. The freshman shortstop sent the first pitch she saw from Kentucky State pitcher Stephanie Hamilton off of the scoreboard over the fence in left center field, scoring Bitzer and Hunter to end game one in a run rule, 10-0.

Bitzer (4-2) got the win for Tars going six innings giving up just one hit while striking out 13. Danielle Garay (0-1) took the loss for the Thorobretts in a little over two innings of work giving up six runs, just one earned, on six hits. Brown had two hits with five RBI.

Wasting no time, Rollins picked up right where they left off in game two. Highlighted by a two run single up the middle by Foster, the Tars scored five runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and three errors by the Kentucky State defense.

The Tars added another run in the in the fourth on a RBI triple by Alred that scored speedy leadoff batter Aimee Halpin after Halpin led off the inning with a double over center fielder Brittney Flores' head, making the score 6-0 heading into the fifth.

After pitcher Amye McIntyre worked a scoreless top of the inning, Hunter led off Rollins' half of the inning with a double that landed just fair inside the left field line. Walters was then retired on a ground out to short that brought up Brown with Hunter now on third after she previously advanced on a wild pitch.

Brown then reached on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt, scoring Hunter, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Junior Hannah Lovestrand followed with a single putting runners on first and second bringing up Halpin with one out. Halpin then roped her second double of the game to the wall in center field, scoring Brown and Lovestrand to end the game in a run rule, 9-0.

Freshman Taylor McGowan (3-0) earned the win for Rollins, working four innings giving up no runs on four hits. Lorena Villamar received the loss pitching a little over four innings giving up nine runs, six earned, on nine hits. Alred had three hits with two RBI.

Rollins will be back in action this Sunday, Feb. 23 when they host Kentucky State in a rescheduled double header that was postponed Wednesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. Fans can follow along with all the action on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
