MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 21, 2010)- The Rollins softball team took another step closer to capture their second consecutive conference championship claiming a series sweep of Florida Tech. Rollins grabbed the two games by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 and with the pair of wins the Tars improve to 38-4, 17-1, while Florida Tech falls to 21-24,8-13.
Game one saw the Tars escape with another closely contested victory against the Panthers. The game ended up being another pitcher's duel, but Christine Roser prevailed with the victory. Roser went seven strong innings and only allowed one hit, while collecting eight strikeouts on the afternoon. Roser now owns a 10-2 record for the Tars in her first season in the circle.
The Tars did not waste time getting on the scoreboard as they tallied a run in the first inning and then added an insurance run in the fifth inning to secure the victory.
Florida Tech used two pitchers in their efforts to quell the Tars lineup and were successful for the most part as they allowed five hits and two runs. The duo of Brianna Barth and Tiffani Bishop combined for six strikeouts.
After going 0-for-6 in last night's game, Jessica Moreland came back and provided the spark for the Tars in game one with a 2-for-3 performance and collected the lone RBI.
Lauren Caldwell, Kaycie Bevis and Roser also collected one hit apiece on the afternoon to round out the hitting.
Game two of the doubleheader saw another closely contested game between the Tars and Panthers, which saw the Tars prevail 2-1.
Both Frame and Bishop held the opposing lineups scoreless through five innings until Florida Tech struck first on the scoreboard. Reanna Witt singled to get the inning started for the Panthers in the fifth. The next batter, Tyler Miller belted a trip to right field that brought Witt all the way home, but was thrown out at the plate by an excellent throw from Caldwell. Danielle Healy singled to Frame to score Miller from third and the Panthers took a 1-0 lead.
Rollins would respond in the top half of the sixth inning with a Roser single to give the Tars a runner on first. Krista Rodden was due up next and did not disappoint, as she belted a two-run shot over the center field wall to give the Tars a lead they would not relinquish.
Frame took care of the rest shutting down the Panther attack in the last two innings to secure her 26th victory of the season. Frame collected 10 strikeouts and only allowed four hits on the afternoon.
The Tars will host Barry starting Friday, Apr. 24 at 7 p.m. from Lake Island Park.
