INDIANAPOLIS, In. (May 10, 2010)- The Rollins softball team was selected as the third seed in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, it was announced Monday morning.
Since 2004 the Tars have made the tournament five times and have made it four straight since 2007.
This year's host site will be Huntsville, Ala., home of the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers. Rollins will begin their journey for the championship with their opening game against the sixth seed Arkansas-Monticello. Rollins is 2-0 all-time against Arkansas-Monticello with their last meeting coming back in 2007. Rollins defeated the Cotton Blossoms, 2-0. The bracket also features conference foe and seventh seeded Nova Southeastern, who will take on second seeded Alabama-Huntsville in their opening game.
The Tars posted a 44-4 overall record and 23-1 Sunshine State Conference mark to earn their first ever outright conference championship. The 2009 squad set the record for most number of wins in program history, but the 2010 team posted the best win-loss percentage in school history and will look to eclipse the victory mark in NCAA Tournament play.
Rollins boasts a 21 game winning streak to end the season with their last loss coming against Florida Southern back on March 24th. The Tars have won every series this season except the matchup against Valdosta St. The Blazers swept the Tars in the two game series back on March 16th, to hand the only series loss to the Tars.
Valdosta State is the top seed in the tournament and hosting the other half of the South Region bracket.
Rollins will carry a lot of firepower into the tournament this year with Christine Roser, Krista Rodden and Jessica Moreland combining for 153 of the team's 277 RBIs. Rodden and Roser also are hitting over .400 for the season and look to propel the Tars deep into the tournament.
The Tars have six All-SSC players that will look to contribute to this year's run into the tournament. Garnering the honors were freshmen Kirsten Frame, Jessica Moreland, Lauren Caldwell, Amber Pederson, Roser and Rodden.
Frame carried the load for the Tars in the circle by posting a 30-2 record and notching a 1.32 ERA. Frame garnered the prestigious Sunshine State Conferecnce Pitcher of the Year and Freshmen of the Year accolades for her performance in the circle.
