WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 10, 2011) - The fifth-ranked Rollins softball team claimed all four major awards on the 2011 All-SSC Team, it was announced Tuesday. Christine Roser was named Player of the Year, Hope Bitzer Pitcher of the Year, and Veronica Alred Freshman of the Year, while Michelle Frew was named SSC Coach of the Year.
Joining Roser and Bitzer on the All-SSC First Team was Krista Rodden (2B), Amber Pederson (SS), and Monica Meadows (OF). Receiving Second Team laurels, along with Alred, were Jessica Moreland (1B) and Kirsten Frame (P).
Senior Christine Roser, a four-time All-SSC First Team selection, led the Tars and SSC in multiple statistical categories. The Winter Springs, Fla. native appeared in all 47 contests for Rollins and led the squad in batting average (.431), runs (56), doubles, (18), and RBIs (48). Amongst all SSC players, Roser led in slugging percentage (.808), on base percentage (.569), runs, doubles, total bases (105) and walks (39). Her .431 average ranked second in the conference, along with her 48 RBIs and nine home runs. In 2008, she was also tabbed as Freshman of the Year.
Junior transfer Hope Bitzer made an immediate impact on the team for the Tars leading the pitching staff with a 0.42 ERA, which ranks first amongst all Division II softball players. The right-handed hurler posted a perfect 18-0 record in 19 appearances and a 10-0 mark in conference play. She recorded 12 shutouts (second in the nation) and combined for one shutout, totaling 116.1 innings of work. She led the staff with 144 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .132 batting average.
In her first season at Rollins, Alred posted a .359 batting average with 23 RBIs and 26 runs in 32 games played. She blasted five home runs and six doubles, posting a .628 slugging percentage. The Royal Palm Beach, Fla. native was also 9-10 in stolen bases.
Winning Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, Head Coach Michelle Frew earns the honor for the third time in her career. The Tars boasted a 45-2 record, the best amongst Division II. She led Rollins to its highest ranking in school history and captured her third straight Sunshine State Conference regular-season championship.
Rollins will host the 2011 NCAA Division II South Region Tournament beginning Friday, May 13 at Lake Island Park in Winter Park.
