MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (April 13, 2012) - The Rollins baseball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Barry Buccaneers Friday at Fienbloom Field. The loss is the second straight for the Tars as they fall to 21-13 on the season and 4-6 in the SSC while Barry improves to 16-18 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
Barry drew first blood in the opening frame as they scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Adrian English to plate Luis Arrizurieta.
Rollins then tied the ballgame in the top of the sixth on a leadoff home run by Brandon Curson.
In the bottom of the sixth, Rollins was able to get out of a two-out bases loaded jam after starter Taylor Smith placed a duck on the pond and was then pulled for Garrett Yount. The right-hander then put another two to load the bases but reliever Mike Howard struck out Lyndon Coleman to end the inning.
The Tars took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh as Kevin Mager got things started for Rollins with a one-out double. Sean Reilly then drove in Mager from second on a base hit up the middle.
Howard then worked himself out of two more two-out bases loaded jams in back-to-back innings in the seventh and eighth with both ending in similar fashion.
In the top of the ninth, Barry was able to retire the inning allowing one batter to reach base. In their home half of the inning, Rollins went through four arms as Howard started the ninth. He faced one batter and allowed one hit before being pulled for Jack Murray. The southpaw stepped in and took care of business striking out Elliott for the second out of the inning.
Mike Herrmann then came into relief for Murray and gave up back-to-back walks to load the bases and was finally pulled for Adam Ogburn. The right-hander then gave up a hit that went over the head of leftfielder Hunter Mayfield that got away to drive in two Barry runs for the walk-off win. Herrmann (2-3) was charged with the loss as he failed to record an out.
Barry's Calvin Rayburn (2-1) earned the win in 1.0 inning of work as he allowed one hit.
Rollins will wrap up the weekend series against Barry on Saturday, April 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon. Fans can follow the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
