WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 6, 2011) - Playing amongst a large crowd of students who were celebrating Fox Day, ninth-ranked Rollins shutout 25th-ranked Florida Southern 9-0 on Wednesday in a key Sunshine State Conference match-up.
The Tars move to 13-7 on the season and 4-2 in SSC play while the Mocs fall to 11-7, 3-3 SSC. The win seals the No. 3 seed for Rollins in next week's SSC Tournament, hosted by Nova Southeastern in Altamonte Springs.
Rollins was dominant in doubles play with only one match ending close. In the top spot, 14th-ranked Jeff Morris and Arturo Baravalle downed Ivan Marevic and Brian deMontort 8-3 while Sebastian Hafner and David Yawalkar defeated Robbie Palmiotto and Vladimir Barabash by the same 8-3 score at No. 3.
Rollins momentum rolled right into singles play with just two matches going to three sets.
In the top flight, 12th-ranked Morris defeated Marevic 7-6(2), 6-2 while 37th-ranked Baravalle took Paradis 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
Hafner was a 6-2, 5-7, 11-9 winner over deMontfort in the No. 3 match and Yawalkar dropped the first set to Johnson at No. 4 by a score of 5-7, but came back to seal the match with wins of 6-2, 6-2.
Chris Herbert won at No. 5, 7-5, 6-3 over Nathan Leavitt with Alabaster taking the No. 6 match over Palmiotto 6-4, 6-2.
Rollins will play Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, April 9 at the Tiedtke Tennis Courts. Prior to the match, head coach Ron Bohrnstedt will honor the Tars' seniors.
