SKILLMAN, N.J. (June 7, 2011) - For the third straight season, Roshni Luthra was named All-America while the Rollins women's tennis team landed at No. 9 in the final ITA Division II National Poll, it was announced Tuesday.
The Tars earned a top-10 final ranking for the third straight season, posting a 20-7 record in the spring. They earned a 6-2 mark in Sunshine State Conference play and picked up a 17th-straight NCAA Tournament bid.
The SSC dominated the final rankings with national champion Barry sitting at the top and national runner-up Lynn coming in at No. 2.
The Tars' season was highlighted by head coach Beverly Buckley's 400th career victory, a 5-1 win over Florida Southern in the SSC Tournament third place match.
Luthra finished the season ranked 14th in singles play, posting a record of 12-9 from the top spot. The senior went 4-2 in conference play and picked up two victories over nationally ranked opponents.
Margaret Junker missed out on an All-American spot by two positions, finishing the season ranked 22nd in singles play. She had a phenomenal senior season, going 20-3 overall, which includes a 3-0 mark at No. 1 and 18-3 record in the No. 2 position.
Junker and doubles partner Kayli Ragsdale ended their season as the 16th-ranked tandem in Division II. The duo went 14-13 playing in the No. 1 position and picked up one victory over a top-25 team.
Rollins began the year ranked 10th in the preseason poll and quickly rattled off three straight wins, beating 24th-ranked Florida Tech, 16th-ranked Flagler and Valdosta State. A setback to fifth-ranked West Florida was followed by a shutout of 41st ranked Tampa.
The Tars then fell to NAIA fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle, but strung together six straight wins to sit at 10-2 after a spring break trip to California. Upon returning to Winter Park, the Tars lost a heartbreaker to NAIA second-ranked Auburn-Montgomery, beat Division I UT-Chattanooga, and fell to third-ranked Lynn.
Rollins then went 5-1 in its final six matches, five of which against ranked teams, to capture third place in the SSC standings.
The Tars met Florida Tech in the first round of the SSC Tournament and advanced with a 5-1 win. In the semifinals, Barry dropped Rollins 5-0, but the Tars bounced back with a 5-1 decision over Florida Southern.
In NCAA Tournament play, Rollins again faced Florida Tech and scored the same 5-1 victory. Lynn waited in the second round and blanked Rollins en route to the Fighting Knights runner-up finish.
A trio of talented underclassmen complemented seniors Luthra and Junker in singles play. Freshman Mariana Salvador, who joined the team in the spring season, posted a 19-2 mark while going undefeated at No. 4 and No. 6. Fellow newcomer Ashley Rosenberg earned a 16-7 record with sophomore Stefania Tkach going 17-8.
Rollins will pick up the 2011-12 season in the fall with the annual C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational and the ITA Region Tournaments.
