TAMPA, Fla. (November 17, 2011) - Sophomore Megan Hodges showed everyone in the Bob Martinez Center why she was an All-SSC First Team selection as she led the Tars past the North Alabama Lions, 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, in the first round of the NCAA South Region Tournament.
Hodges led the Tars offense with 22 kills on 54 swings for a .352 attack percentage, to go along with nine digs and a career-high six blocks. Camille Indest chipped in with 12 kills on 24 attempts for a .458 clip.
Setter Kiana Parks aided the Tars' .282 team hitting percentage with 47 assists, while Phoebe Corder led the defense with 19 digs. Both Corder and Hodges were All-SSC selections.
Rollins started off strong taking a 25-20 win in the opening frame. The Tars outhit the Lions .400-.289, while Hodges registered six kills. Rollins was able to take the go-ahead lead after a 6-all tie on a kill by Hodges. An attack error by the Lions gave the Tars a one-point advantage as Jessica Wilson gave Rollins a two-point cushion on a block solo. UNA came as close as three on several occasions, but a kill by Collyn Welsch secured the win.
The Tars continued right where they left off in the second set going on a 5-0 run to begin the frame. North Alabama then used a 9-1 run to take a 16-13 lead over Rollins. The Lions then strung along another six straight points to extend their lead to 22-15. UNA took the second set 25-19.
With a .324 hitting percentage in the third set, Rollins bounced back to take a 25-22 win. The Tars held the Lions to a .070 hitting percentage, as Hodges led the team with seven kills. Rollins held a seven point lead over the Lions at the 22-15 mark, but UNA was able to come within two at the 23-21 mark on a kill by Natalie Marsh. A pair of kills by Indest, along with a serving error by the Lions gave the Tars the win.
In the fourth set, Rollins pulled away with a 25-21 win after the set saw six ties and four lead changes. North Alabama came as close as one at the 18-17 mark, but Rollins ousted the Lions scoring three of the last five points in the set.
Rollins will now advance to the second round and will face the winner of the Eckerd/Christian Brothers match. First serve is set for 5 p.m. Fans can follow the Tars in their quest for a championship on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
