Baseball Blanks Assumption in Opening Game of Baseball Week

WINTER PAR, Fla. (March 2, 2012) - Rollins used multiple-run innings to defeat the Assumption Greyhounds in an 18-0 thrashing Friday night in the opening game of the 64th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week.

The Tars registered their third straight contest in double-figure hits with 14 and seventh overall on the year.  Tonight's win was also the second straight shutout of the season.  Rollins now improve to 10-4 overall.

Seventeen Tars saw action in the opening game of the historic tournament as Zach Persky and Josh Band led all hitters with three hits apiece.  Persky was 3-for-5 with four RBI, a run scored and a double.  Band was 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a triple.

Nick Adams chalked up a pair of hits with a season-high three RBI, to go along with a run scored and two walks.  Brian Lattanzi had two hits off the Greyhounds with a career-high six at-bats.  He tied his season-highs of two RBI, two runs and a double.

Assumption, playing in their first contest of the season, started Nick Peters, but found themselves in a jam as Peters struggled to find his spot over the plate and gave up five runs on six hits.  Peters was saddled with the loss going two-thirds of inning.

As Rollins held a comfortable 5-0 lead in the opening frame, the Tars tacked on another two runs in the third to lead 7-0.  Rollins then plated four more runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to lead 12-0.

In the top of the fourth, Assumption threat to plate a run but Rollins was quick to get out of the inning on a double play, followed by a grounder to short as Nick Adams barehanded the ball to first.  Rollins was still not done with putting runs on the board as they plated six in the bottom of the eighth.   Three came off of bases loaded walks, another on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, one on an error by the Greyhounds shortstop and the final on a sacrifice fly.

Combined, both teams used a total of 13 pitchers with Assumption going through eight arms and Rollins five.  Right-hander Taylor Smith (2-0) made his fifth appearance for the Blue and Gold to earn his second win of the season.  Smith worked five innings on the hill, striking out three and allowed two hits and two walks.  Reliever Garrett Yount went to work in the top of the seventh and he struck out the side.
