Tars Water Ski Third at Regionals to Punch Ticket to Nationals

TALKING ROCK, Ga. (October 3, 2010) – The Rollins water ski team finished third at the National Collegiate Water Ski Association Eastern Regional Championships over the weekend to earn a spot at nationals.

Rollins combined to score 6805 points and were just 25 behind runner-up Florida Southern. Alabama took the team title with a score of 7915.

The Tars won the women’s division handily behind a strong slalom performance. Individually, Delfina Cuglievan and Geena Krueger tied for second place overall with 1020 points. Michale Briant scored 940 and tied for fifth while Michaela Cooper (870) was seventh and Clementine Leger (780) tied for eighth.

Cuglievan and Krueger tied for first in slalom while Cooper finished fifth. Briant came in with a sixth place finish and Leger was 13th. Rollins also won tricks and Briant exceled individually, winning the event with a score of 370. Krueger scored 330 and was fifth, Cuglievan scored 320 in sixth and Leger totaled 310 to finish seventh. Cooper took 10th place with a score of 280. In jumps, Cuglievan was second with a distance of 118 feet and Krueger took third with 109 feet. Cooper jumped 42 feet and landed in 10th, Briant jumped 40 feet in 11th and Leger went 38 feet in 14th. As a group, the Tars were second in jumping.

The Rollins men were fourth overall, totaling 2925 points. Alabama won with a score of 4320 and were followed by Florida Southern (3915) and Clemson (3725).

In slalom, Grigorios Sarantis led the way for the Tars, finishing fifth. Drew Phillips took 13th, Billy Shugart 20th, Tom Shugart 25th and Drew Doty tied for 26th. Sarantis was Rollins’ top finisher in tricks, tying for ninth with a score of 740. Phillips totaled 660 and tied for 11th while Tom Shugart was 16th with a score of 455. Billy Shugart’s score of 165 was good enough for 26th while Robert Vezina took 28th with 140 points.

Phillips led Rollins in jumping, finishing 13th with a leap of 96 feet. Sarantis went 84 feet and was 14th while Billy Shugart covered 63 feet and took 19th. Vezina (50 feet) took 23rd and Tom Shugart (39 feet) was 29th.

Overall, Sarantis came in fifth with a score of 935 while Phillips was eighth with a total of 840. Billy Shugart (570) was 14th and Tom Shugart (520) was 17th.

The Tars will be back in action at the 2010 NCWSA National Championships on October 13-16 in Buda, Texas.
