ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior right-hander Tim Griffin was named the 2010 Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Year as three others were honored with all-conference awards, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Griffin was joined by centerfielder Taylor Ferguson on the SSC First-Team list, while catcher Ben Hewett and starting pitcher Stephen Hiscock picked up second-team accolades.
Griffin, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., posted an 11-2 record with a 2.34 ERA to sit atop the conference. He also ranks first in opponent batting average with a .219 mark, and 92.1 innings pitch, while finishing fifth in strikeouts with 86. He becomes the first player since Steve Edsall in 2004 to garner the award.
Ferguson finished his senior season with a team-best .393 average and ranked first in the conference in hits with 95 and doubles with 27. Those 27 doubles also set a Rollins single-season record eclipsing Bryan Bennett who set the mark in 2009. A native of Charlton, Mass., tallied 54 RBIs and finished with 32 multiple-hit game s and 10 multiple-RBI contests.
Hiscock and Hewett secured second-team honors. Hiscock ended his senior year with a 6-2 record and a 3.63 ERA. In his 14 starts, Hiscock pitched one complete-game shutout and logged 91.2 innings and tied Griffin in strikeouts with 86.
Hewett was the Tars’ anchor behind the plate to finish with a .382 average, a career-best. He recorded 43 runs scored, 71 hits, 13 doubles, three home runs and 39 RBIs. He also tallied 28 walks and ranks 53rd in Division II as one of the “Toughest to Strike Out.”
