WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 16, 2017) – The 20th-ranked Rollins men’s lacrosse team trailed by just one at the half to Colorado Mesa University, but were unable to stage a comeback as the Tars ultimately fell to the Mavericks by a final score of 13-9 on Thursday night at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field.
The loss drops the Tars to a mark of 4-4 on the season, while Colorado Mesa, who received votes on this week’s USILA DII Poll, advances their record to 7-1 overall.
Junior goalie Jake Hogan earned 16 saves as he faced 44 shots on the night to keep the Tars in contention throughout the game. Greg Taicher led the Tars in scoring on the night with three goals and one assist for four points, while Justin Diamond netted a hat trick of his own. Long stick midfielder Andrew Matthews netted a goal of his own, along with Connor Ashton and Carson Buell with one each. Dishing out assists along with Taicher were Eric NeCamp, Dalton LeMaster, and Dylan Bassham. Matthews led the team in ground balls with five, followed by Austin Jackson with four. Leading the team in caused turnovers was Lucas Brush with two.
The Mavericks were led by Steve Brandenburg in overall points with five as he tallied three goals and two assists. Calen Ketcham was close behind with four points overall as he netted three goals and one assist. Reece Callies scored two goals of his own, while Connor Larrick matched Callies in points with a goal and an assist. Jack Griffin, Jayden Campbell, and Aaron Eggiman each earned one goal to complete Colorado Mesa’s scoring on the night. In goal for the Mavericks, Remi Reeves made nine saves while allowing nine goals as he faced 36 shots from the Tars.
HIGHLIGHTS AND QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS
First Quarter l Rollins opened up the scoring with a goal by Buell off of an assist by Bassham at the 12:14 mark, but Colorado Mesa answered back with two straight to take a 2-1 lead with 4:47 to go in the first quarter. Rollins evened the score at 2-2 with a goal by Matthews, and regained the lead with 3:12 to go in the quarter, but a goal by the Mavericks with 2:38 on the clock gave CMU the 3-2 lead entering into the second period.
Second Quarter l Colorado Mesa took a two goal lead as they opened up the second stanza with two straight, leading 5-2 with 11:28 to play before the half. Rollins retaliated with two consecutive scores to knot the score at 5-5 with 7:37 to go before the break, but a late goal by CMU’s Larrick with two ticks left on the clock gave the Maverics the 6-5 edge at the half.
Third Quarter l The Mavericks once again opened a quarter with two straight goals, taking an 8-5 lead at the 12:06 mark. Rollins bounced back, scoring three straight to even the score at 8-8 with 4:47 to go in the third quarter, but the Mavericks found of the back of the net to more times to close out the third quarter with a 10-8 lead.
Fourth Quarter l Rollins opened the fourth quarter with a goal by Diamond off of an assist by Taicher at the 13:25 mark, but Colorado Mesa closed out the quarter with three unanswered goals to end the game with a 13-9 advantage and winning their fourth straight.
- Colorado Mesa now leads the series, 3-2
- The last time the two teams met, Rollins earned a 7-5 victory in a hard fought contest on March 19, 2016.
- Tonight’s loss marks the first of the season for the Tars to an opponent not ranked within the USILA DII Top-20. However, Colorado Mesa was featured on this week's poll, receiving votes.
- Colorado Mesa was picked to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the second straight season. The Mavericks claimed the inaugural title last season, defeating Westminster in the RMAC Championship.
- Rollins scored nine goals against Colorado Mesa’s Remi Reeves, who is currently ranked 10th in Division II in goals against average at 6.82.
