LAKELAND, Fla. (February 18, 2017) – Playing against the toughest field of any Division II regular season tournament in the country, Rollins closed day one of the Matlock Invitational alone in eighth.
The seventh-ranked Tars posted a round of 293 in the morning and jumped two spots on the leaderboard after a one-under 287 in the afternoon.
Florida Southern is serving as host of the tournament at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland. The event features 15 schools, including seven of the top eight ranked teams in the nation with all but one receiving votes in the poll.
West Florida and Nova Southeastern turned in the low rounds of the day and put some distance on the field. Top-ranked UWF is 23 under after scores of 278-275. Fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern is a shot back (-23) with rounds of 275-279. Lynn (-10), Barry (-4) and North Alabama (E) round out the top-five.
Sam Grindle leads the Tars, sitting tied with eight others in 21st place. He shot scores of 71-73 for an even-par 144 after day one. Barry Babbitt (73-72) and Will Hall (75-70) are two of 10 golfers tied for 29th with one-over scores of 145.
Jakob Van de Flierdt turned in rounds of 74-73 and is tied for 39th with 147 strokes while Collin Engelhardt is tied for 42nd with a four-over 148 (76-72).
Rollins will play with Florida Southern and Valdosta State for the third and final round, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 14.
