WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 19, 2017) – Owners of a record 18 Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championships, the Rollins men’s tennis team has its sights set on number 19, April 20-22 at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
The Tars are the No. 4 seed in the 2017 tournament and will face fifth-seed Florida Southern on Thursday, April 20 at 10 a.m. to open play. Rollins closed the regular season with a 6-3 win over the Mocs just five days prior.
Rollins posted a 10-9 overall mark in the regular season and stands ranked No. 28 in the ITA Division II national poll and No. 7 in the South Region. The NCAA has the Tars ranked No. 8 in the South Region and in need of a win over FSC to bolster its postseason resume.
Sophomore Cody Gubin and freshman Sami Kirberg led Rollins in the conference regular season. Gubin went 12-4 overall and 5-2 in league play. Kirberg posted a 10-4 overall mark and 5-1 SSC record and is riding a seven-match winning streak into postseason. Senior Patrick Sell went 6-9 at the No. 1 position while Ziad Melhoui and Francesco Racanelli both went 10-9 overall and 3-4 in the SSC.
Kirberg and Sell emerged as the Tars top doubles team with a 7-4 overall record and 5-2 mark in league play. Ahmed Albitar and Daniel Feri went 7-8 playing at both No. 1 and No. 2.
Rollins enjoyed an unprecedented streak of 15-straight SSC Championships from 1980-1994, while also grabbing titles in 1996, 2001 and 2004.
Barry enters the tournament as the top-seed, sitting ranked No. 2 in the nation after its 18-1, 7-0 regular season. Saint Leo is the defending champion and this year the No. 2 seed in the tournament with Lynn at No. 4.
The winner of Rollins and Florida Southern will face the winner of No. 1 Barry and No. 8 Eckerd on Friday, April 21. The championship match is slated for Saturday, April 22 at 10 a.m. Fans can follow all of the action at SunshineStateConference.com.
