DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – On October 22 & 23, the Rollins Women’s Tennis team gave back to the tennis community by volunteering as Court Monitors in the 2016 Green Ball 10 & under Sectional Championship at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.
The team is always looking for ways to participate and offer their services to the community, and what better way to help out than on the tennis courts. 32 boys and 32 girls had to finish in the top two positions of 16 state-wide tournaments (USTA Level 6) played from January to September in order to qualify for the 2016 Championship. This competition was a big event for these 10 & under kids as well as a big step towards their tennis careers. The Tournament Director contacted our Coach, Bev Buckley, to ask if we would volunteer to be Court Monitors/Officials for the matches - and it was a success!
“Being a kid, you have so many dreams and aspirations, and for many it includes getting to play tennis at a college level. Being at such proximity and interacting with college players is hopefully something they will always remember as a cherished memory, and a motivator to keep them working hard towards their goals” - Shannon Etten ‘17 & Fabiana Vitanza ‘18, Co-captains 2016-2017.
The Tars claim it has been one of the most fun and gratifying experiences they have had in tennis. It was especially interesting to be on the ‘other’ side, as an authoritative figure and not as a player. “It felt good to give back to the kids and the tennis community in general”, the team said.” “It was reviving to see these kids working so hard and I think that is what most of us were like at that age. That was us ten years ago!” - Teresa Kaiser ‘19
The Tournament Directors, Head Referee and players & parents were delighted with the outcome. The tennis team is already looking forward to volunteering again next year.
