MELBOURNE, Fla. (January 25, 2017) – The Tars' women’s tennis team has been selected sixth in the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced Wednesday.
Rollins enters the 2017 campaign ranked No. 38 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Tars finished last season with an overall record of 12-9, and 3-5 in SSC play. Rollins saw their season come to an end in the first round of the conference tournament, when the sixth seeded Tars fell to the third seeded, and eventual champions, Lynn Fighting Knights.
Lynn, who comes into the year ranked No. 3 by the ITA, have been selected first overall, and received six first place votes. Barry, the ITA’s sixth ranked team, is predicted second in the poll, the Bucs receiving 56 votes. Saint Leo, who made it to the national semifinal last year, and enters the season ranked No. 4 nationally, round out the top three, earning 53 votes.
No. 15 Nova Southeastern falls in at fourth in the SSC Poll, followed by No. 33 Florida Southern. The Tars come in at sixth, after earning 31 votes from the coaches. Florida Tech, Tampa, and Eckerd round out the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions.
Beverly Buckley enters her 30th season at the helm of the Rollins program with a very young team. The Tars return six players, however, Shannon Etten is the only senior on the roster. Etten, who played out of the first position last year for the Tars, will serve as a leader for the talented groups of sophomores and freshmen on the squad.
The Tars first official contest of the year comes on Thursday, February 14, when Rollins hosts No. 12 Flagler at the Martin Tennis Complex. The Tars host Barry on Saturday, February 18, at 11:00 a.m. to start conference action.
