BRADENTON, Fla. (April 22, 2017) – In a match that stretched over two days, after it was postponed due to weather, fifth-seeded Rollins fell to third-seeded Florida Southern, 5-3, in the Consolation Game of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The Tars finish the SSC Tournament in fourth place. Twenty-seventh ranked Rollins will await their NCAA fate with a record of 11-11. The No. 25 Mocs improve to 15-7 on the year.
The Tars got an early lead, coming via a pair of doubles victories, on Saturday. Shannon Etten and Carlye Goldman won an exciting clash with Lola Asis and Selin Devrimci 9-8, in the second spot. Savanna Fuller and Teresa Kaiser tallied the other doubles point for Rollins, defeating Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik, 8-5, in the third position.
The Mocs recovered when singles play resumed, on Sunday, taking the first three decisions of singles play, giving them a 4-2 lead, and putting the Tars on the ropes. Kaiser took her match in the sixth position by a score of 6-2, 6-4, over Asis. But, Florida Southern clinched with a second position victory. Junior Fabiana Vitanza was locked in battle with No. 32 Sasha Nionova, each player winning one set, when the Mocs won their decisive fifth point.
The Tars will now await the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Selection Show, which is set to take place on Tuesday, April 25, at 8 p.m.
