SET-UP:
After a hard fought 2-1 series win against the 18th-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks, the Tars will step out of conference play, for a single game against the Ave Maria Gyrenes. The Tars currently sit at 22-15 this season, and 7-8 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Gyrenes are coming off of a loss to Keiser University 6-1, and are just 1-4 in their last five games. Overall, the Gyrenes are 18-29, and carry a 5-16 Sun conference record.     

TRACKING THE TARS:

Peter Nicoletto continues to lead the Tars offensively, batting .340 as well as compiling 51 hits, 10 doubles, and 10 home runs. He leads the team in RBI with 38, and is first in the SSC with eight triples this season. Junior Grant Ashline is the reigning SSC Baseball Player of the Week for his standout performances in the Tars upset series victory against Nova Southeastern. Ashline hit his first two triples of the season last weekend, including a crucial one in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game of the series, which led to him scoring the game winning run off of a Mike Dolan sac fly to deep center field. Mike Purcell leads the Tars in batting average at .359, as well as total hits with a team high 55.

The Tars bullpen has been impressive so far this season. Caleb Jakes is 4-1 on the year, pitching 45 innings and dishing out 45 strikeouts. Jakes ranks second in the SSC with an ERA of just 2.60. Sophomore Brad Case has pitched 72 innings so far, the most in the SSC and he ranks third in the SSC in strikeouts, with 75. AJ Chacon is 5-1 on the year, making 13 appearances on the mound, and has an ERA of just 3.71, which is 10th in the SSC.    

TRACKING THE GYRENES:

Rico Soto and Andy Hernandez are the front runners for the Gyrenes. Soto and Hernandez have both tallied 50 hits this season, and are both batting over .307. Soto has eight doubles, one triple, and six home runs, while Hernandez has a team high 39 RBI, and 10 home runs this season. As a team, the Gyrenes have a batting average of .284, and have an on base percentage of .371.

On the mound for the Gyrenes, Austin Munn is tied for a team best 58 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched. He is 5-4 on the season, and has an ERA of 2.82. Also dishing out 58 strikeouts on the year is junior Christian Dufresne in 49.1 innings pitched. Justin Bureau is 2-0, and has a team high five saves on the season so far.
