Coming off a 2-1 series win against the tenth ranked Florida Southern Mocs, the Tars look to continue their winning ways at home, as they take on the defending National Champions, the Nova Southeastern Sharks. The Tars currently sit at 20-14 this season, and 5-7 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Sharks are the eighteenth-ranked team in the nation, coming off of a four-game series with Palm Beach Atlantic, where they ended with a 2-2 series tie. Overall, the Sharks are 24-13, and carry a 10-5 conference record.
TRACKING THE TARS:
Peter Nicoletto earned his second SSC player of the week award for his offensive contributions last weekend against the Mocs. Nicoletto went 4-11 from the plate, but of his four hits, three of them were home runs. He had six RBI last weekend, bringing his season total to 35, which leads the team. Nicoletto leads the SSC in triples this season, he has hit seven and is just one away from breaking the Rollins career triple record. Senior Mike Purcell is batting .355 on the season, and leads the Tars in hits this season with 50. Brian Brooker is tied for first on the team with nine doubles to go along with a .352 batting average and six home runs on the year. As a team, the Tars are batting .300 with 360 hits and 218 runs scored.
Brad Case was elected as the SSC pitcher of the week on Tuesday. The Sophomore had a career best 10 strikeouts, and only gave up one earned run in the Tars series clinching victory over the Mocs. Case is now 5-4 on the season, and has an ERA of 3.15, and ranks third in the SSC with 66 strikeouts. Caleb Jakes has made 14 appearances on the hill for the Tars, compiling a 4-1 record and a team low ERA of 2.85.
TRACKING THE SHARKS:
The Sharks are led by Jeremy Vasquez, who is batting .338 on the season. He also leads the team with 11 home runs this year, to go along with 39 RBI which is good for fourth in the SSC. Brandon Gomez has tallied 41 hits as well as a team best 42 RBI this year. Senior Kevin Suarez leads the SSC in stolen bases, and has also contributed 53 hits this season, nine of which were doubles.
The Sharks have multiple pitchers available in their arsenal. Senior Matt Hardy has compiled five wins and two losses on the year, and he leads the team in strikeouts this year with 50, through 52.2 innings pitched. Second on the team with 45 strikeouts is fellow senior Joe Dibenedetto, who has appeared in nine games this year with eight starts. He has racked up a 4.50 ERA through 46 innings pitched. Josh Glick has a team high five saves so far this season.
