MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 1, 2017) – Rollins senior Marie Gilbert and sophomore Carly McLendon were both honored by the Sunshine State Conference Wednesday with the announcement of All-SSC teams.

Gilbert was named Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference while McLendon took SSC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Gilbert, a fifth-year senior from Harmony, Florida, has led the Tars all season long since scoring a career-high 21 points against St. Michael’s in the opener. She is averaging 11.0 points and 4.5 rebounds a game after the regular season. Gilbert was the team’s top scorer 10 times, leading Rollins to a 20-9 record and runner-up finish in the SSC.

Gilbert had a standout freshman year, but was forced to sit out the 2013-14 season due to injury. Since coming back, she has played every game for the Tars and during her career averaged 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds a game.  Gilbert has been named to both the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s and Rollins Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls every semester of her career.

A native of Sanford, Florida, McLendon has emerged as a force in the paint during her second season. She has rolled up 72 blocks on the season to lead the SSC and rank 12th in all of Division II. Her 2.77 blocks per game average is 10th-best in the nation. McLendon smashed the school single season record midway through the year and is already eighth in Rollins history with 97 for her career. Five times this season she was named SSC Defensive Player of the Week.

McLendon is also averaging 8.7 points and a team-second best 6.6 rebounds a night. She joins Paris Moore (2011-12) and Emmalee Schill (2013-14) as Tars named SSC Defensive Player of the Year.

SSC regular season champion Eckerd highlighted the list with Victoria Vine earning Player of the Year, Ada Yalcin Newcomer of the Year and Paul Honsinger Coach of the Year honors. Maria Bardeeva of Nova Southeastern took Freshman of the Year honors.

Rollins, who received votes in the latest D2SIDA National Media Poll, is the three-seed in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament and will host Florida Tech on Wednesday, March 1 in the quarterfinal.
