MOBILE, Ala. (October
14, 2011) - Rollins senior Lucas Jovita cruised in his semifinal match
Friday and will play for a national title Saturday at the USTA/ITA Small
College Championships.
Top-seeded Jovita matched up with Christiaan Lee-Daigle from
Queens University of Charlotte and scored a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win. The match
was tied four-all until Jovita went on to win eight of the next 10 games and
earn a spot in the finals.
"Lucas has a knack for knowing what to do and when to do it
when he's on the court," said Head Coach Ron Bohrnstedt. "His opponent had a
big serve and big forehand, but Lucas did a great job of hanging in there at
the beginning and running away at the end."
Jovita will match up with Daniele Piludu of Concordia (NY)
in the championship match. Piludu was also a convincing winner in the semifinals,
defeating Hans Hach of Abilene Christian 6-4, 6-3.
"Hopefully the way Lucas played today will bode well for the
final," added Bohrnstedt. "Piludu has a very
similar style to Lucas, so it should be a dogfight. We are confident that he
will continue to get stronger as the final match progresses.
Jovita will look to become the first Rollins singles player
to win the ITA national title in more than two decades. The final match is
slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday inside the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in
Mobile, Ala.
