WINTER PARK, Fla.
(February 1, 2012) - Now in the last month of the season, 14th-ranked
Rollins solidified itself as a contender for the conference title, running away
from Tampa 79-51 Wednesday.
The win keeps Rollins (16-3, 8-2 SSC) in a tie with Barry
for first place in the Sunshine State Conference.
Eleven different players scored for Rollins, led by 11
points from Sarah Blackburn. Ashley Losch and Kourtnie Berry each added 10
while Kristina Mingos tallied nine points and seven rebounds.
Tampa (9-11, 2-8 SSC) was paced by 18 points from Moriah
Hodge while Jaleesa Harmon added 15.
Rollins jumped out to a 7-2 lead only to have UT come back
and lead 8-7 five minutes into the game. The advantage would be short lived and
the Spartans only of the night, however as a Blackburn triple on the next
possession put the Tars ahead for good.
The Tars held a 21-17 lead at the 7:20 mark and slowly
pulled away the rest of the period, going into halftime ahead 38-24.
Rollins' offense methodically extended the gap to start the
second period as the Tars led 60-40 with 8:20 to play. They would go on to lead
by as much as 30, 77-47, late in the game.
The Tars shot 49 percent (32-65) from the field and hit nine
3-pointers while UT hit 43 percent (18-42) and was just 4-of-15 from long
range. Rollins earned a 32-29 rebounding edge and forced 25 Spartans turnovers
while committing just 12.
Rollins heads to St. Petersburg on Saturday, Feb. 4 to face
Eckerd at 2 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live on the Tars Sports Network
at RollinsSports.com and locally on 91.5 FM, WPRK.
