WINTER PARK, Fla.
(February 12, 2012) - Top-ranked Lucas Jovita cruised and 11th-ranked
Jeff Morris scored a huge upset, but No. 8 Rollins fell to No. 5 Lynn 7-2 in both
schools Sunshine State Conference openers Sunday.
After an undefeated fall in Division II play, Jovita fell in
his first action of the spring, but has since won two straight, beating 12th-ranked
Vlad Cirla 6-4, 6-2 in the top-flight match Sunday.
The No. 2 match proved to be the best of the day as 11th-ranked
Morris won a three-set thriller over fifth-ranked Willi Wolfer, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
Wolfer was the 2011 SSC Player of the Year and is a two-time All-America
selection, finishing last season ranked fifth in Division II.
Lynn (2-0, 1-0 SSC) earned an early advantage with a sweep
in doubles play. Fourth-ranked Cirla and Amaury Van Haelen teamed to defeat
Jovita and Jason Alabaster 8-5 in the No. 1 match while eighth-ranked Wolfer
and Luca Pavanelli won 8-4 over Ari Davis and Malte Christesen. George Laffey
teamed with Max Kouyate to win the No. 3 match over Morris and Constintin
Sturdza 8-1.
The Fighting Knights took each of the lower four singles
matches in straight sets.
After facing a pair of top-five NCAA Division II teams and
the second-ranked team in NAIA to start the season, Rollins next meets 12th-ranked
Flagler on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 2:30 p.m.
