Rollins Competes at ITA South Regional

VALDOSTA, Ga. (September 22, 2017) – Rollins men's tennis team took part in the first day of the ITA South Region Championships, competing in both the singles and doubles competition.

Eight Tars saw action in singles play, with three advancing in the main draw.  Cody Gubin fell to Juan Motta of West Florida in the first round.  Daniel Ferl received a first round bye, but dropped a hard fought match to Alvaro Terron of AUM.  Ninth-seeded Nicolo De Fraia also advanced with a bye, but was upset by Eban Straker Meads of AUM in the second round.  Atakan Gezer fell in a three set match to Jose Porfirio of Lynn and Francesco Racanelli dropped his first round match to Joan Valy of Mississippi College.  Sami Kirberg advanced to the round of 32 with a bye and a three set victory over Xavier Pineda of the hosts, Valdosta State.  Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz also advanced with a bye before cruising past Joao Yamacita of Delta State 6-2, 6-2.  Ziad Melhaoui also remained in the main draw with a victory over Petter Dahlin of Montevallo.

Rollins sent four doubles pairs to the courts in today's action, with two of them staying alive in the main draw.  Kirberg and Gezer fell in the first round to Thomas Salmon and Patricio Zarazua of Palm Beach Atlantic, while Melhaoui and Ferl dropped their match to Francisco Aparicio and Bruno Babic of Saint Leo.  The Tars' fifth-seeded pair of De Fraia and Nicolas-Ruiz defeated Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Victor Ahlbeck of Florida Southern to make their way into the round of 16, while Gubin and Racanelli dominated Davis Stewart and Fernando Rivas of Valdosta State 8-2 to advance.

Play in the ITA South Region Championship with continue tomorrow, Saturday, September 23 in Valdosta, Georgia. 

Each team in the South Region has an opportunity to compete in the event, and Singles and doubles champions from the four-day tournament will earn an automatic berth to the 2017 Oracle ITA Cup, which is scheduled for October 11-15, 2017. In addition, each divisional singles winner and Oracle Cup Doubles Champion will receive wildcards into the Division I ITA Fall National Championships on November 1-5, 2017 in Indian Wells, California.
