Tars Conclude Play at ITA South Regional

VALDOSTA, Ga. (September 23, 2017) - The Tars fought into the late rounds of the rain delayed ITA South Regional. Competing in both singles and doubles events over the last two days.

Sami Kirberg competed in the main draw round of 32 against Alfonso Castellano of West Florida.  The Tars' sophomore fell in a marathon match, 6-7 (7-5), 6-0, 10-8.  Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz was the only other Rollins singles player still alive in the main draw.  The junior from Spain tallied a pair of victories, easily dispencing Andres Donayre of Embry-Riddle 6-1, 6-3, and AUM's Matias Destefanis 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.  There the Tar fell to the third-seeded Carlos Gomez of Barry in a three set match, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.  The ninth-seeded Nicolo De Fraia, the Tars highest ranked participant, won his first match in the consolation bracket, but had to retire due to injury.  Atakan Gezer tallied a pair of straight set consolation draw victories, before eventually falling in the quarterfinal.  Ziad Melhaoui registered three wins, but bowed out of the tournament with a semifinal loss to second-seeded Juan Couder of Embry-Riddle.

The Rollins team of Nicolas-Ruiz and De Fraia fell in the main doubles draw to Eban Straker-Meads and Matias Destefanis of AUM.  The match went into a tiebreaker, but the Tars ultimately fell 9-8 (7-4).  Cody Gubin and Francesco Racanelli also fell in the round of 16, to the third seeded team of Couder and Deepak Vishavkarma of Embry-Riddle.  Daniel Ferl and Ziad Melhaoui registered two wins in the consolation draw, but ultimately fell in the semifinals.  Gezer and Kirberg earned three wins in the consolation draw, advancing to the finals, where they dropped a highly competitive 9-7 match.

Play in the ITA South Region Championship with continue tomorrow, Monday, September 25 in Valdosta, Georgia. 

Each team in the South Region has an opportunity to compete in the event, and Singles and doubles champions from the four-day tournament will earn an automatic berth to the 2017 Oracle ITA Cup, which is scheduled for October 11-15, 2017. In addition, each divisional singles winner and Oracle Cup Doubles Champion will receive wildcards into the Division I ITA Fall National Championships on November 1-5, 2017 in Indian Wells, California.
